2023: I’m still consulting with God on whether to run for senate, says Ortom

Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State, says he is yet to take a decision on whether he will contest for a seat in the senate in the 2023 elections.

According to NAN, Ortom said this on Saturday while speaking with journalists.

Responding to a question on if he will contest after completing his tenure as governor, Ortom said he will take the decision in line with what God permits.

“I am still consulting with God because I do not take any decision without consulting my God. If he says yes, I will go ahead and contest, but if He says no, I will obey his decision,” he said.

The governor also said reports of division in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be ignored, as members have been working in unity.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Tuesday, vowed never to surrender any land to Fulanis in the state. Ortom said he would rather die than surrender his land to the Fulani “who have made over a million homeless in his state.” The governor spoke in Markudi, the state capital, while receiving in audience the Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known as Doctors without Borders. He lamented that herders have killed, raped and rendered some people of the state homeless. Ortom berated the Nigerian government for paying lip service to its fight against insecurity. Ortom insisted that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has refused to apprehend killer herders, despite having the capacity to arrest them. He said, “Our people are dying, our women, mothers are being raped, our children can’t go to school, they are suffering. “These criminals, they display themselves on social media, claiming they are here for an agenda to drive our people away and take over their land and also kill them. “And they are here courtesy of the Federal Government but for me, if they come, then I’m ready to die rather than to surrender my land to Fulani men. If God didn’t protect me, then I need no help from anybody.”

“PDP as a party made mistakes in the past and has learnt a lot of lessons from its mistakes and it is fully prepared to take over the leadership of the country from the APC,” he said.

“Nobody should deceive you that PDP is polarised. We are working together as a party.

“We met and agreed that the positions which are currently in the north should go to the south, while those in the south should go to the north.

“This is the resolution of the zoning committee and it is graciously accepted at the national level.

“Nobody has begrudged the decision. It is widely accepted by all PDP members.”
