The police in Ekiti State, on Tuesday, arraigned seven persons before an Ado Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged possession of illicit drugs.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the defendants, who also allegedly damaged a pair of police handcuffs in the process of their arrest, had in their possession substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
He listed the defendants as Azubuike Emmanuel (35), Oluwafemi Samson (23), Sunkanmi Okondo (27), Bello Femi (22), Nnamdi Ugwu (34), Awoseemo Sesan (32), and Agboju Isiaka (24).
The prosecutor said the defendants committed the offence on December 13, 2020, around 1.05pm at Easy Life Brothel in Ikere-Ekiti.
“The offence contravenes sections 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, 1966 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012,” he said.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel for the defendants urged the court to grant their clients bail, promising that they would not jump bail.
Chief Magistrate Abdulhamid Lawal admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety each in like sum.
He adjourned the case till January 26, 2021 for hearing.
