Crisis deepens in Ekiti PDP as Fayose, Olujimi fight for the soul of the party

Former governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose's faction of the party has been at loggerhead with the faction of Senator Olujimi over the control of the soul of the party

The Ekiti chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to be on a war part as the faction of the former governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose and that of Senator Biodun Olujimi refreshed their crisis amicably.

Daily Trust reports that the ward congress held on March 7, was another factor that created a divided house within the opposition party in Ekiti state.

Globalgistng gathered that on Wednesday, August 26, the local government elections further polarised the group as well as the state congress of the party to elect the state executive of the party.

The loyalists of Senator Biodun Olujimi had since challenged the irregularities in the conduct of the ward congress which has snowballed to a court matter till date.

The newspaper reports that the crisis may have started when some aggrieved members of the party who worked with Ayodele Fayose, decided to team-up with Senator Olujimi, who they see as a rallying point after she defeated Senator Dayo Adeyeye of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to clinch the Ekiti South senatorial district seat.

It was gathered that those members include: Kehinde Odebunmi, Suyi Ogunsuyi, Senator Duro Faseyi, Tunji Odeyemi, Yemi Arokodare, among others.

They noted that Fayose as not being truthful during his leadership of the party as governor, and so encouraged Olujimi to provide the leadership lacking in Ekiti PDP at that time.

In Fayose’s camp, Olujimi is seen as trying to hijack the leadership of the PDP from Ayo Fayose, an allegation she has since debunked.

Olujimi, however, accused Fayose’s camp of trying to take advantage of her gender to sideline her from the management of the party, even when she has given her best to the service of both the party and state, promising to fight for her right.

It was gathered that the national secretariat of the PDP is allegedly in favour of Ayo Fayose holding the leadership position of the party (being a former governor) as every move seems to be working in his favour, particularly the presence of the caretaker committee working in line with the mandate of the PDP national.

The committee set up by the national body of the PDP to achieve peace in Ekiti state could not achieve any significant success as the crisis has become more visible with some of the members divided according to who they were working for.

The chairman, Senator Agboola, boycotted the local government and state congresses while the Secretary, Prince Odeyemi, was present to oversee those congresses, noting that he was officially representing the national secretariat of the PDP.

Prince Odeyemi, in his interaction with newsmen before the congress for the election of the state executive members on Saturday, August 29, explained how far the peace committee has gone in its assignment.

He confirmed the crisis between the two groups after the ward congress, and said all efforts to reconcile the two groups proved abortive, hence the decision of the national working committee of the PDP to continue with further elections in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the 2019 gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Plateau state ordered all candidates that pulled out of the state congress to form a parallel state executive.

It was reported that Useini who described the congress as a sham gave the order following the declaration of Chris Hassan as the state chairman of the party.
