US President Donald Trump said he was very upset by the resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according to The New York Times.

The American leader called the Japanese politician his “very good friend.”

“We have a great relationship and I am very saddened by this, because it must be very difficult for him to leave,” Trump said.

Earlier, on August 28, Abe announced his intention to resign . According to the head of the Japanese government, the reason for leaving is his deteriorating health. Abe said he will undergo a new course of treatment that will require a long recovery.

On the same day , the secretary general of the government, Yoshihide Suga, was named Abe’s possible successor . It was also reported that the policy needed to undergo treatment for ulcerative colitis.

Commenting on Abe’s resignation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the politician had made an invaluable contribution to the development of Russian-Japanese relations.
