Chora Monastery, also known as the Church of Christ the Savior in the Fields in Turkey, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be converted into a mosque. As noted on Friday, August 21, Al Jazeera , the corresponding decree of the country’s government was published by order of its leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to the TV channel, after the Second World War, the church was transformed into the Kariye Museum, because at that time the idea of creating a new secular state was being promoted in Turkey after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
On July 10, Erdogan signed a decree to turn the Hagia Sophia (Hagia Sophia) into a mosque. The agreement on the museum status of the temple from 1934 was canceled.
Against changing the status of places of interest were a number of countries and the Russian Orthodox Church . In turn, the Kremlin regarded the transformation of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque as an internal matter of Turkey . At the same time, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted the importance of maintaining access to the cathedral as a museum.
The Turkish leader, in turn, called on everyone to respect the decision of the country’s authorities to change the status of the cathedral and called his decision a correction of a historical mistake . At the same time, he noted, Turkey is ready for any cooperation with UNESCO on the issue of preserving the Hagia Sophia as a heritage site.
