“The brave residents of Belarus demonstrate that their voices cannot be silenced by fear or torture. The United States should support Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, call for fair elections, ”the post says.

Biden also added that Russia should not “interfere” with the situation in Belarus. According to him, “we are not talking about geopolitics, but about the right to choose their own leaders.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed hope that the situation in Minsk would be resolved without intermediaries and that Belarus would not be led by supporters of the destructive logic “you are either with Russia or with Europe”. He called on Western countries to remember how their mediation in Ukraine ended in 2014.

On August 19, the head of the European Council Charles Michel said that the European Union did not recognize the results of the elections in Belarus and promised to impose sanctions against a significant number of officials who are “responsible for the violence, repression and falsification of election results” in the country.

Protests continue in Belarus after the August 9 presidential elections. People took to the streets of the country who did not agree with the voting results. According to the Central Election Commission, Lukashenka has become the winner for the sixth time in a row.

Demonstrations are accompanied by detentions and the use of force by law enforcement agencies. Three civilians were killed. Lukashenka, commenting on clashes between police and protesters, blamed the opposition for the brutality during the rallies.
