Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu was officially confirmed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo state after a meeting held on Friday, August 7.
This statement was given by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, August 7, after Ize-Iyamu was led to The Aso Rock by Yobe state Governor Mai Mala Buni.
It was reported that President Buhari met with pastor Ize-Iyamu, the party’s flag bearer in the Edo state elections, and the meeting was also attended by Governor Buni, who is the Chairman of the National Board of Trustees of the APC.
Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano, who is the chairman of APC campaign council in Edo, and chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state, were also present at the meeting which looked like a last collective leap to reclaim the southsouth state.
Emerging reports in Channels TV claimed Ize-Iyamu was officially presented with the party’s flag by President Buhari in the presence of two other governors elected on the party’s platform.
Speaking after the meeting, Ize-Iyamu thanked the president for the acceptance and warm reception given to him.
He also expressed confidence in winning the election by defeating the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki. Edo governorship election has been scheduled for September 19 by the electoral umpire in the country, leaving the poll a two-horse race between the two heavyweight parties – APC and PDP.
Ize-Iyamu emerged as the party candidate after Governor Godwin Obaseki was axed out of the ruling party by the APC screening committee on Friday, June 12, over the alleged defective certificate.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the household of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has openly denied endorsing Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, APC candidate, in the forthcoming election.
Addressing pressman on Wednesday, August 5, spokesperson of the Edo state governor’s household Oyuki Gaius-Obaseki Jr said the family will not armfold itself while some dissents are attempting to bring crack into their midst.
Gaius-Obaseki further added that the family has agreed to sanction the marauders who made the false declaration, adding that those who endorsed their son’s opponent are shameful.
