Edo Poll: Obaseki seeks political survival, visits Wike

Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was at government House in Port Harcourt on Sunday to visit Governor Nyesom Wike of rivers, apparently to pitch his tent with the PDP.

The purpose of the visit to Wike, however, was not disclosed, but later the two governors held a private meeting at the Government House.

Obaseki’s visit to Vike follows the disqualification of the first of them from participating in the upcoming Edo gubernatorial elections on the APC platform.

The APC approved the reports of its selection and appeals committees, which disqualified Obaseki and two other candidates from running in the June 22 primary for Governor in Edo.

The party’s national working Committee (NWC), led by its national Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, announced Obaseki’s disqualification on June 13 at a press conference in Abuja.

Oshiomhole said that NEC has considered the two reports, noted with satisfaction that the Committee members were unanimous in their decisions.

The appeals panel, headed by Professor Abubakar Fari, also supported the results of the selection Committee by submitting the Oshiomhole report to the national APC Secretariat in Abuja.

Political observers in Port Harcourt said that Obaseki’s visit to Wick may not be related to his disqualification by the APC from running in the party’s primary for Governor and that he may be seeking to join the PDP to contest the gubernatorial election.

The independent national electoral Commission has scheduled elections for September. 19 for the Edo gubernatorial election.
