“Four” BMW has become, perhaps, one of the most anticipated new products of this year. Despite the relatively small sales volume of the outgoing model, its successor became a symbol of the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the car design of the Bavarian brand. Its leitmotif turned out to be the huge vertical nostrils of the radiator grille, extending from the edge of the hood to the bottom of the bumper and referring to classic pre-war BMW models.
The famous Hofmeister curve, which over the past sixty years has become a trademark of the brand, has disappeared with the change of generations, as well as on the presented a year ago four-door Gran Coupe eighth series. Taillights with a characteristic pattern also remind of the “eight”. Additional side air intakes in the bumper now rely even on the basic two-door, although on models with the M-package and more powerful versions, they are slightly larger. And from the rear of a car with an M-body kit, you can identify it by the trapezoidal exhaust pipes, the “diffuser” in the bumper and a small spoiler on the trunk lid. The already outstanding drag coefficient Cd (0.23) is reduced by another 0.015. To increase the rigidity of the body under the hood, on the bottom and in the places where the suspension elements are attached, amplifiers are added.
The new coupe of the fourth series is noticeably larger than the previous one: in length, the two-door has 4768 mm against 4638 mm, in width-1852 mm (plus 27 mm), although the height has not changed much (1383 mm). The wheelbase also increased by 41 mm (to 2851 mm). For the sake of better handling, the center of gravity was moved 21 mm lower, the weight distribution on the axles is distributed in a ratio of 50: 50, although the engineers could not avoid an increase in curb weight: for example, the rear-wheel drive coupe BMW 420d added as much as 140 kg and now weighs an impressive 1605 kg.
The interior with the change of generation has retained the previous architecture, although there are still enough updates. They are the same as the related “Treska”: a new steering wheel, a 12.3-inch virtual instrument display available for an additional fee, and a ten-inch screen of the media system with the BMW OS 7.0 operating system (there is a remote update function and fresh BMW Maps navigation). The “four” has lost its former scattering of buttons on the Central console — the climate control and audio system control units are more accurately designed, so the interior is visually lighter.
At the start of sales, the engine range will consist of three petrol and one diesel units. The 420i (184 HP, 300 Nm) and 430i (258 HP and 400 Nm) versions are equipped with two-liter turbochargers, and at the top of the petrol, range is an all-wheel-drive version of the M440i xDrive with an in-line turbocharger that produces 374 HP and 500 Nm. The two-liter turbodiesel on the 420d version develops 190 HP and 400 Nm (all-wheel-drive xDrive is available for a surcharge), and later it will be joined by six-cylinder modifications 430d xDrive (286 HP, 650 Nm) and M440d xDrive (340 HP, 700 Nm).
All diesel units now have dual-flow turbochargers. In contrast to the updated “five” and” six ” Gran Turismo, presented last week, the soft-hybrid superstructure in the form of a 48-volt starter generator with a capacity of 11 HP, which helps in the first seconds of acceleration and works within the start-stop system, is not intended for all engines: the younger gasoline turbochargers have not yet been affected by electrification. All presented modifications are paired with an eight-speed “automatic”. And about rechargeable hybrids are still silent — most likely, they will not be in the family of the fourth series at all.
As for the chassis, the “four” differs from the “three” not only by more sporty calibrations of the suspension and power steering. In front, the negative camber of the wheels was increased and other steering rods were installed, and the track was widened by 23 mm at the rear. Standard wheels are 18 inches in diameter. You can order adaptive suspension, electronically controlled rear differential, and more powerful m Sport brakes.
Already in the initial versions, the new “four” is equipped with fully led optics, and adaptive laser-phosphor headlights are offered for an additional fee. An advanced set of auxiliary electronics includes an automatic braking system and adaptive cruise control, which can keep the car in the lane, as well as an assistant when driving in reverse.
Deliveries of commercial vehicles will begin in the fall. The new G22 series coupe will also appear in Russia, the prices are already known: from 3 million 130 thousand rubles for the BMW 420i in the initial configuration, and it already includes an external M-package. During the year, the company will introduce a new “four” with a convertible body (and with a soft top instead of the current hard folding roof!), a five-door version of the Gran Coupe and a “charged” BMW M4.
