Academician Filachev releases from jail because of the threat of coronavirus

Anatoly Filachev, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and former CEO of JSC “NGO “Orion”, was released from jail in Moscow due to the threat of infection with coronavirus. This decision was made by the First court of appeal on April 7.
The 70-year-old academic was requested to be released by his lawyers, while employees of the investigative Department of the Ministry of internal Affairs and representatives of the Prosecutor’s office opposed it. However, the defense managed to convince the court that Filachev’s detention during the coronavirus pandemic is dangerous and inappropriate.
Thus, the academician was changed to house arrest.
Filachev was arrested in March 2019 and has been held in jail all this time. Initially, the academician was accused of fraud on a particularly large scale while working as CEO of JSC “NGO “Orion”. Later, the article was reclassified as embezzlement.
According to investigators, Filachev signed fictitious contracts with contractors of the NGO, under which funds were withdrawn. The amount of damage to rostec Corporation is estimated at more than 1 billion rubles. The academician does not admit his guilt.
